  8.  AB    The National AIDS Committee established in 1987 realised that an
  9.        effective AIDS prevention program must be supported by a relevant
  10.        multidisciplinary and well coordinated research programme. Research is
  11.        needed to study the spread of HIV infection in the community, define the
  12.        factors which place people at risk, study the natural history and
  13.        pathogenesis of HIV/AIDS, monitor the personal, social and economic
  14.        impact of HIV/AIDS, and study the efficacy of various intervention
  15.        strategies. A Sub-committee was formed to promote and coordinate
  16.        HIV/AIDS research in Indonesia. Around 60 research projects has been
  17.        implemented in Indonesia to study the epidemiology of HIV/AIDS,
  18.        understand knowledge, attitudes and behaviours related to HIV/AIDS and
  19.        develop interventions to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. This paper will
  20.        review the important findings of the research projects and their
  21.        relevance for policy development to prevent HIV/AIDS in Indonesia.
